The List

As you can see the list is slowly being whittled down. Last night I finished up the mini blinds, which only leaves the two windows in my bedroom without new blinds. I’ll replace those whenever I get around to doing that room, but for the time being I’m focusing on the rooms where I spend most of my time.

I also did some more work in the office last night… there’s still a bunch to be done (including rearranging my computer rack), but it’s getting to the point where I won’t mind people seeing it. I need to pick up some shelf brackets for the curtain rod shelf, and eventually I want to replace the desk with something that’s not so deep… right now I’m using the oak dining room table that I bought when David and I shared an apartment. It’s served it’s purpose well, but it’s not very stylish.

Tonight I have to go grocery shopping as there’s nothing to eat in the house so I’m not sure how much will get done this evening.

Things To Do Before 10/22

Rather than catch myself flat footed, I’ve begun a running list of stuff to do:

  1. Buy light switches for the kitchen
  2. Find a couch to buy
  3. Buy the couch
  4. Buy towels for the bathroom
  5. Buy a microwave cart
  6. Buy a couple of trash cans
  7. Buy a table cloth
  8. Buy or make a hanging lamp for the living room
  9. Buy hardware for the bathroom
  10. Buy food for the party (clearly this list will grow as I decide on a menu)
    • Two turkeys (no larger than 16 lbs ea)
    • 3 gallons peanut oil
    • Veggie tray
    • 3 cases of soda
    • 2 cases of beer
    • Wine
    • Ice
    • Plastic Forks, Spoons, Knives
    • Plastic Cups
  11. Install switches and electrical outlets in the kitchen
  12. Swap out the Mini Blinds in the living room windows
  13. Remove the brush pile from the driveway
  14. Hang curtain rods in kitchen bookcases
  15. Pressure wash the driveway
  16. Hang the other two curtain rods
  17. Iron the curtains
  18. Rearrange my office
  19. Move boxed books up to the bedroom closet
  20. Install hardware for the bathroom
  21. Install the shelf in the bathroom
  22. CLEAN!

Things I’ve Done Today

Here is a brief list of things I’ve done today

  1. Took a nap
  2. Replaced four outlets and faceplates in the kitchen
  3. Installed mini-blinds on three windows (kitchen, bathroom, landing)
  4. Printed, scored, and folded thirty-five party invitations
  5. Printed twenty-one envelopes
  6. Cooked a pot roast
  7. Took another nap
  8. Drank a glass of wine
  9. Invented a new green bean casserole

I know there’s something else I’ve done that merits being mentioned, but damned if I can think of it.

Maybe item number eight should be upped by two or three.

One Short Curtain

I’ve been very productive during the last couple of days thanks in large part to Ginny & David. Friday evening Ginny & I went shopping… we hit two Big Lots, the Pier One Closeout Store, and Wal-Mart. I spent about $150 and came home with curtains for the living room, curtains to cover the washer/dryer, fabric to make curtains for the kitchen (to include the sliding glass door, the bottom sections of the bookcases, and a vanity over the sink window), mini blinds for all of the small windows in the house, canvas totes for the shelf under the living room windows, and some miscellaneous chotchkes for decorating purposes.

I had planned to put up a single shelf to run under both windows and at some point, Ginny suggested it be made like a box so that some kind of storage bins could be used in it. I also had an idea to put shelves over the curtain rods over the living room windows, and both sliding glass doors. So Saturday morning I called David to see if he felt up to working on the box shelf and anything else we could do. I drew up a plan, drove to his house, and then we went to Lowe’s to pick up supplies. $70 later we had wood for the box shelf, and the curtain shelves, closet rods for the curtain shelves, and screws to put it all together.

The Box Shelf Plan

Construction of the box went very smoothly considering how untrue the wood was. It seemed that none of the edges were square to any other, but with the help of David’s belt sander, the box came together very nicely. We left for my house around 5:00, but had to stop at Home Depot to see about brackets for the curtain shelf. When we were finally ready to install the shelf, David pointed out that I hadn’t allowed for the electrical outlet, so back to Lowes (for the fourth time in three days) to get a spade bit and a keyhole saw to make a hole in the back of the shelf for the outlet. The result in the living room so far is this:

The Living Room Windows

I really couldn’t be happier with it. As soon as the curtain rod was up, Ginny pulled out the curtains we bought the night before and put them on the rod. The thing is, the curtains were on a clearance shelf, and there were only three of the same color, so we absent mindedly bought them all (not paying any attention to the length of any of them).

When the curtain rod was finally in place we discovered that by pure and utter dumb fucking luck, not only had the short curtain been placed correctly in the center, but that I had installed the rod in THE exact perfect spot to allow the short curtain to be of use. Incredibly lucky, in deed.

I still need to decide on a paint color for the box shelf and curtain mounting assembly. It’s a toss up right now between black or white…. any thoughts? Maybe I’ll put up a poll and let you guys decide.

Oh, and here’s the curtain over the washer/dryer if you’re keeping score at home. Yes, I realize they need to be ironed.

The Washer/Dryer Curtain

Today I’ll finish up the invitations for the housewarming party and take a couple of naps. It’s been a very productive few days, but I’m beat.

First Annual Hartman Boys Camping Trip

In case you didn’t know, the original idea for this trip was Bryan’s. He called me up one day last January and started telling me how sad Dad sounded when Dad was telling him about this father and son he had encountered who were out hunting together. Neither my brothers nor I ever picked up the hunting bug and it’s far from a family secret that Dad has always wished that was different.

Bryan’s idea was that the three boys and Dad go for a camping trip with the intention of making it a yearly occurrence. We announced the plans on his birthday and the First Annual Hartman Boys Camping Trip was in the works.

Housewarming Party

It’s official: my housewarming party will be Saturday, October 22, from 2:00 until whenever. The cards will say “until 7:00 PM,” but I certainly won’t be kicking anyone out. The idea is that having it in the afternoon will allow people to congregate outside if they’re so inclined. I’ll do my best to accommodate anyone needing lodging, but the available space is filling up quickly.

Dad will be bringing his turkey frying rig and I expect we’ll do at least two turkeys. There will also be plenty of other food and beverages.

Real live dead tree invitations will be going out Saturday or Monday. If you don’t happen to get one, please don’t think I’ve intentionally slighted you. Everyone is welcome.
