Paper Mache

Continuing with my creative streak, I ventured into another medium this weekend: Paper Mache.

My first attempt is this happy little number. I’ve been referring to it as the gourd vase because it reminds me of one of those dried gourds. I’m thinking of painting it, but the brown paper is kind of appealing.

It took a lot longer than I expected. The wire structure took the better part of a night to do and I finished the paper over the course of two days. It’s incredibly sturdy.

My current project is this Crescent Vase. It’s upside down in this picture because I’m letting the bottom dry. The next step is to go over the top and sides with another layer of paper.

This one is going much faster. The shape is a bit more regular which makes things easier.

The paste recipe is pretty simple. Two parts white glue to one part water. In the beginning I used gloves, but as the paste dried on them, they’d stick to the workpiece and pull up the paper. I’ve switched to using my bare hands which is much more satisfying.

Plus it’s really fun to peel the dried glue off my fingers when I’m done.
