Infrant ReadyNAS NV+

Dave has been singing the praises of his ReadyNAS for a couple months now, so I took the leap Thursday and ordered an empty NV+ from Newegg as well as 4 Seagate 320 GB drives with which to fill it. The end result will be about 800GB of space.

In all honesty, my media server could probably satisfy the same role, but it’s been out of commission since I moved it into the office and even when I do get it back online, I’ll likely convert that to my regular desktop machine and move my current desktop into a supporting role of some sort.

The thing that appeals to me about the ReadyNAS is that it’s a purposed machine that appears to do it’s job very well. I’m looking forward to having RAID protected storage for my photographs, software, music, and video. Additionally, the fact that I’ll be able to access the machine from outside my network will allow me to provide some offsite backup support for a few of my consulting customers. I’m also planning to scan all of my important documentation and store that on the NAS as well.

My only worry is about the noise from the drives I ordered. Everything should be here by Tuesday, so I guess I’ll know then.
