Virginia Tech
I stayed home from work on Monday because I wasn’t feeling too well and I spent most of the day on the couch watching 24. Around 4:00 PM Ralph called from the office to check on me, and mentioned that they’d been watching the news all day about the happenings at Virginia Tech. I asked what he was talking about and gave me the quick details: 30-some people killed.
It turns out, Ralph knows one of the victims very well. He’s known family since before she was born and the girl had even served as a bridesmaid in the wedding of one of his daughters. He taught her for many years in his church’s youth group and had attended many, many of her recitals and events over the years. He was visibly distraught yesterday after spending the previous night with the girl’s family.
It’s inconceivable that something like this happens. I can’t even imagine the horror these kids felt as they heard shot after shot going off around them, knowing that their friends could be dead, and that they could be next. My heart really goes out to the survivors and those left behind without their loved ones.
I saw an editorial cartoon yesterday that really touched home. It showed the mascots of many of Tech’s collegiate rivals. The caption read: “Today we are all Hokies.”
