On The Fritz

I have a sneaking suspicion that my heat pump needs some work. I’ve setup an appointment with a guy who came highly recommended to me by a coworker. I’ll be taking the afternoon off to see what’s up. Hopefully it just needs a little TLC, though, it won’t freak me out too entirely if it needs major work. If it’s going to cost more than $500 or $600 to fix, I think I’m going to see about replacing it. I’m not sure exactly how old it is, but it does a horrible job of cooling the upstairs.

More Concrete Countertops

Just like when I bought my first car, I saw Volkswagen Beetles everywhere. And now that I’ve pretty much decided on Concrete Counters in the kitchen (whenever I actually get around to it), I’ve been stumbling into information left and right.

This weekend I watched a PVR’d episode of Rock Solid. Dean & Derek built a bathroom vanity top from concrete with the help of Dan Gobillot. The finished product looked great, but nothing I’d be interested in having. As I checked the DIY Network website, I see they’ve done an episode for Kitchen Counters as well. Hopefully I can catch that one in reruns sometime.

I also saw a great writeup at Instructables.com on a concrete countertop project. Besides the content of the post itself, there are some great comments.

That’s Settled

After an initial value of $1500 depreciated to $1300, and my $500 deductible, I’ll be getting a check for about $800 from my insurance company for the damage I incurred from the lightning storm at the end of June.

All in all, I guess I’m satisfied. Mostly I’m just happy to be done with the whole mess. I can finally get rid of the stack of worthless electronics gear sitting in my living room. Which is a good thing, considering I’m having some friends over for dinner Saturday.

Had to do it.

Total Cage Combat - Chain Reaction

In a couple of weeks, a few frinds and I will be sitting cage-side at the Total Cage Combat fight at the RIR Raceway Complex. I ordered tickets for everyone a few weeks ago, but I just now saw the fight card, and I have to say I’m impressed: so far they have 20 fights scheduled.

Of course, the fighters are nobody I’ve ever heard of, but Matt Serra will be making an appearance. I think I’ll take my camera and hope like hell no one makes an issue out of it.

What’s especially cool about this event is that it’s all MMA, unlike the Combat Sports Challenge events which tend to be too have too much Muay Thai for my tastes. Nothing against serious professional Muay Thai, but all the amateur/semi-pro stuff I’ve seen locally has bored me to tears.

Amazing Wildlife Photos

I like wildlife photography, but even the better stuff doesn’t often move me. Haha.nu featured some photographs today by a photographer named Steve Bloom that are probably the best I’ve ever seen.

The Snow Monkey shots are incredible but everything on his site is nearly perfect.

R0×0rs!!1!

I have a working desktop computer again! I gambled on the processor and won. $60 fix to get my HTPC back up and running… not too bad.

At this point, I think I’m going to wipe the hard drive on this machine, and reinstall Windows. The old machine needed to be wiped and reinstalled anyway, so this will work out. Besides, this machine has the better specs, anyway, and will be better suited as a production machine again.

Update

So where have I been? Well… without a working desktop machine at home, any non-work related computer use has been limited to the occasional check of the email at home on the laptop.

This afternoon I ordered a new processor for what served as my HTPC machine last year. It’s been out of commission since I moved it into the office, and all attempts to get it running have been thwarted by what I’m guessing is a bad processor. If it’s not the processor, I’ll get a new motherboard and go from there.

I’m still waiting for the insurance adjuster to let me know what’s going on with my claim. She seems nice enough, but the process is slower than I like. I originally sent my list to the wrong email address. Because it was during the week of July 4th, I waited until the next week to follow up. I recent the message a week later to the right account, and now it’s just a waiting game for her to get back to me. I’ll probably call her tomorrow to see what’s going on.

Why I’m Not Watching John from Cincinnati

I like David Milch, I really do, but I still blame him for not fighting hard enough for Deadwood. And rather than invest my interest into another series that he’ll give up on half way through, I’ve decided to boycott the show.

Because there was nothing else on TV tonight, I decided to give in. I just finished watching a four episode marathon thanks to HBO OnDemand.

I’m digging the hell out of this show. I don’t have a clue what’s going on, but it’s presented in such a way that the ride is an enjoyable one. The language is typical of Milch… strange and stilted while being gritty and vulgar all at the same time. The characters are all twisted and warped, with baggage to spare. But I like them. Even Cissy.

Hopefully HBO and Milch won’t sell the audience out again.
