Octophants Should Not Be

Week before last I bought a print made by Phin at NoCommercialPotential.

It arrived while I was in PA visiting Grandma.

It’s incredibly cool. You should go buy one yourself.

I’ll post pictures once I get it framed.

Also, photos from the trip to Phipps Conservatory for the Chihuly glass exhibit will be posted in the next day or two.

Time Well Spent

Time spent with the Hansen’s is always time well spent. Our get-together Saturday was nice, with the only exception being our emergency mad dash to Lowe’s to pick up a spare propane tank. Dinner ended up being delayed by about forty-five minutes, but it all worked out in the end.

I sort of threw David into the deep end by letting his initiation to the Xbox be via THP8. We should have started with something from the arcade side of things. Next time I’ll know better.

Birthday Bone Picking

Heh.

I called David to see about plans for Ginny’s birthday. He hadn’t solidified anything yet so I invited them over for dinner tomorrow. He’s bringing the steaks, and I’ll grill them. Mmmmm.

He also gave me a ration of shit for not inviting him over sooner to take a whirl with the new gaming console. I’ll admit here, where he’ll likely read it later, that I figured he wouldn’t be so enamored with it. I’m happy to hear he’s interested and we’ll have some fun tomorrow night fragging each other in Halo 3.

Man, that sounded gay.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I’m beat… It’s time to go home. I was up at 3:00 AM this morning and I’m exhausted. A nap, followed by sleep, and another nap will do me some good.

I, Gamer

Wow.

The Xbox and related accessories arrived Thursday sometime, so when I got home from work, I set it up and commenced kicking some serious skateboarder ass. Let me just say: I’m impressed.

When I first set it up, I started out using the the included composite cables. The colors weren’t what I expected. Mostly green and blue (I know realize I might have had something plugged in wrong). Also, no matter what I did I couldn’t get any sound to come through the TV. I didn’t start off with the HDMI cable because I only had one (the one I ordered specific for the console hadn’t arrived yet). After just a few minutes, I unplugged the cable from DVD player and moved it to the Xbox. Now… SOUND and COLOR!

It’s really amazing how slick the graphics look.

Thursday night I played a little more than an hour of Tony Hawk Project 8 before taking a break. It’s easy to get motion sickness from all the jerking around I do when I play.

Friday I took off work early and played a little more THP8 before moving on to Bioshock.

Again… Wow.

I had pretty much given up on FPS games around Quake 3. I just couldn’t hang. But Bioshock is more than just kill them all and let God sort them out. Again, the graphics are insane. The story seems really cool so far, but I’m having a bit of trouble grasping the intricacies of the modern first person shooter. I went back to THP8 for most of the day and moved myself up in the rankings about thirty places before calling it a night.

Saturday I went to the office for the day to be available to the bookkeeper should she need me. It was a long day… 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. I did at least get a good lot of work done.

Saturday night was more THP8. I finally started getting where I felt more confidence in my ability to use the controls. What little gaming experience I’ve had in the past has all been PC-based so the transition from controlling via mouse and keyboard to handheld controller has been my Achilles Heel.

Sunday I finally made an attempt at Halo 3.

Have I said Wow yet?

SimplyAudiobooks.com

I’ve been renting from RecordedBooks.com for the better part of a year now, and I’ve begin to exhaust the selection of titles I’d like to listen to. I haven’t canceled their service yet, and probably won’t for a little while longer, but when I do, I think I’ll move over to SimplyAudiobooks.com.

They seem to have more titles on CD which is where RB.com is falling short in my eyes. The have a lot of stuff I’d like to listen to, but it’s on cassette… and I haven’t owned a cassette player for fifteen years. RB’s service is good, mind you, it’s just about time for me to move on.

DIY Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder

Heh. The battle rages on.

Billr has posted a pretty ingenious design for a squirrel-proof bird feeder at instructables.com.

It will take a bit of work to make it more appealing to the eye, but from a functional point of view, I can’t find any faults with the design.

Camping Trip Pictures

Have been uploaded to Flickr. Go there now.

Not sure if you’ll get a write-up. I’m a little conflicted.

Xbox 360

So I took the leap and ordered an Xbox 360 this afternoon. Here’s my reasoning:

  • I have a big beautiful 42″ HD Plasma TV that hardly gets a workout from anything that Comcast provides and it’s about time the beast was put through its paces.
  • The buzz about Bioshock really got to me. I’m not a gamer fanboy by any stretch (THPS is the only series I’ve ever followed), but the things I’ve heard about how well the game is designed really have me intrigued.
  • HD-dvd (yes, I realize it’s an add-on).
  • It’ll double as the front end to my resurrected media PC eliminating the need for the creative wiring setups that I’ve been contemplating for the better part of a year.
  • It’ll make my brother happy since we’ll be able to hangout on Xbox live together.

I didn’t exactly cheap-out by going with the platinum version instead of the elite. I thought about it and decided that the extra 100gb of storage just wasn’t important to me. Maybe I’ll regret the decision later, but for the time being I’ll have plenty to keep me busy.

Hopefully it’ll be here by the weekend… but I’m not holding my breath. If it does get here in time, though… don’t expect to hear from me until Monday morning. Though, the more I think about, I may be coming down with the flu (cough, cough).

Kinda Dorky High Nerd

What sort of nerd are you?

A Lying Liar Who Lies

Obviously no pics or camping trip write up were posted this weekend… I’ll get to it when I can.
